Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund

You may have read recently in the press about a new dementia service covering the Waveney area. ‘Dementia Together’ (co-ordinated by Sue Ryder charity and in partnership with local organisations) is being funded by local NHS health and social care organisations to cover the Waveney area until the end of March 2019. This service will provide a helpline for advice and support and signposting to other services in the area and for referral to a ‘navigator’ for more help.
Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund is a voluntary run community-based charity providing advice and support and practical help for those with dementia and their families who are registered with Cutlers Hill Surgery. The HdCF Dementia Support Project and Respite Care Service, have been running for 5 years, funded through grants and local fund raising. Our Dementia Support Worker provides one to one support to people with dementia and their carers and families, runs our local carers group and refers people to our respite service, where trained dementia healthcare workers work with people with dementia and enable family carers to have a break from their caring role.
It is good to see that there is now a support service for people with dementia and their families across the whole of the Waveney area. In Halesworth we will continue to provide all our services and work in partnership with the Sue Ryder ‘Dementia Together’ team. You can access either the ‘Dementia Together’ helpline 08081 688 000 for the whole of Waveney or the Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund helpline 01986 875 641.
Jonny Hawes, who provided our specialist dementia support and advice service seconded from the Alzheimer’s Society and funded by the Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund, has moved over to the ‘Dementia Together’ service and will be covering the whole of Waveney. We wish him well in his new role. We welcome Alice Sparksman our new Dementia Support Worker seconded from the Alzheimer’s Society to our team, who can be contacted on 07860 912 458.
In Halesworth, the Dementia Carers’ Fund will continue to provide our specialist dementia service now and into the future, so with your continued support we are here to help you. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for any advice or information.

Revised dates for Council Meetings

Free Activity Days - a success!

The Apollo Youth Centre hosted two days of various activities on the Campus Playing Field in Halesworth.  Despite the rain and wind over 60 young people took part over the two days.  There were opportunities to play football/dodgeball/four way dodgeball/Tennis/Soft Archery/tag/Power Kiting and more.
The event was run by Go Geronimo who supplied four coaches for the event, one who had actually played at Wimbledon!
On Wednesday the “ Inflatable” football pitch was available and was really enjoyed by those using it. Power kiting was also a great success with three young people being able to control them with great ease.

Hopefully it can become a regular event in the summer holidays.

Look at the Youth Centre's Facebook page for photos.

This event would not have been possible without:-

Campus Project, Apollo Youth Centre - especially Eric and Hannah, East Suffolk Communities Team, Go-Geronimo, Halesworth Town Council, Sentinel Leisure Trust and the young people and their parents/guardians for supporting the event.

New Date for Free Activities

Network Rail Update

Recently Network Rail asked for a meeting with the Town Council regarding the Barrow Crossing. Unfortunately although much effort has been put into advising residents and passengers by the Town Council to abide by the safety rules of the Barrow Crossing, Network Rail’s recent CCTV footage showed that too many crossing users are still not abiding by the safety rules of the Barrow Crossing and this is giving Network Rail the evidence to close the crossing.
The CCTV also showed some people recklessly jumping down from the platforms and crossing over the rails instead of using the crossing. If identified, Network Rail will prosecute these persons for trespass and the fines will be heavy.
Network Rail is under much pressure from its Regulator to close as many rail crossings as possible and Halesworth is a very easy target. It is not a public right of way; it is their property and it is their rules and regulations. If the crossing is closed, everyone will have to trek up to the road bridge and down again regardless as to whether they are carrying luggage, have a disability, pushing a pushchair or walking
with children.

The Town Council is in discussion with Network Rail in an attempt to keep the crossing open but the Town Council needs crossing users to keep to the rules to ensure this happens.

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE NETWORK RAIL THE REASONS TO JUSTIFY CLOSING THE CROSSING.

Alan Holzer Remembered

Many of you are already aware of the sad news of Alan Holzer’s passing. He was somebody who devoted his life to serving others whether it was as a teacher who enthused generations of his pupils by bringing history to life, or as a Town Councillor from 1987 - 1989 and 2007 - 2009, or as member of the many voluntary bodies in the town in which he played an important role, always helping others. Halesworth has been very lucky to have a resident like Alan who has touched so many other residents with his good nature and generosity. He will be sorely missed by many. The Town Council held a minute's silence at the main Council meeting on the 2nd July to reflect on Alan's contributions to the town.
